Huge Recall Issued for ZuPreem Bird Foods

Premium Nutritional Products, Inc has recently announced a voluntary recall of their ZuPreem FruitBlend™ With Natural Fruit Flavors bird foods that are used for large and medium/large birds.  The affected products have date codes of 11/30/13 or 11/13.  They either have of the following lot numbers: 598405052 or 598405072.

Premium Nutritional Products issued the voluntary recall because the combination used in the mixture has a high level of calcium, low levels of phosphorus, and a high amount of vitamin D.  Such a mixture is dangerous for birds and may make them sick.  The mixture is potentially fatal in some cases as well.

If you notice any of the following symptoms after your bird has eaten the recalled products, you need to call your veterinarian right away: decreased appetite, drinking large amounts of water, or watery droppings.

The products affected by the recall were shipped between May 21, 2012 and August 23, 2012.  The products were sold nationwide in pet retail stores, veterinary clinics, zoo parks, and by breeders.  If you have a recalled product, you need to stop giving the food to your bird right away.  You should dispose of the contents in the packaging and return the packaging to the place of purchase to receive a replacement or full refund.
