On November 8, 2012, the Food and Drug Administration announced that Nestlé USA was recalling Nesquik® Chocolate Powder that comes in 10.9, 21.8, and 40.7 ounce containers.  This recall affects all states because the products are sold nationally.  It is important to note that the three sizes mentioned above are the only products affected by this recall.  

Nestlé has decided to voluntarily recall the products because one of its ingredient suppliers, Omya Inc, announced a recall for its calcium carbonate ingredient.  The ingredient may contain Salmonella, and the calcium carbonate is used in the Nesquik chocolate powder.  

There have been no reports of illnesses associated with the powder so far, but the recall was issued as a precautionary step.  

The recalled 40.7 oz products have a UPC code of 0 28000 68230 9 and a production code of either 2282574810 or 2282574820.  The 10.9 oz products have a UPC of 0 28000 67990 3 and production code of 2278574810.  The recalled 21.8 oz products have a UPC code of 0 28000 68090 9 and one of the following production codes:

The recalled products were produced during the beginning of October, 2012.  In order to find the production code, look on the bottom of the container and the code will appear by the expiration date.  If you bought a recalled product, you can return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or you can call Nestlé Consumer Services at (800) 628-7679 for more information.  

The most common symptoms of Salmonella include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.  The symptoms begin to appear about 8 to 72 hours after you eat or drink a contaminated product.  You need to contact a health care professional immediately if you notice such symptoms because Salmonella can lead to more serious complications.
