On September 28, 2012, the Food and Drug Administration announced that Newman’s Own Organics is issuing a voluntary limited recall for its Peanut Butter Newman O’s Sandwich Crème Cookies.  The voluntary recall comes after Sunland, Inc. issued a large recall of peanut butter products, the same peanut butter used in the cookies by Newman.  

The voluntary limited recall was announced because of the possibility of Salmonella.  The organism presents the most danger to young children, the elderly, and those with weak immune systems, but adults can still experience severe symptoms like high fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.  If left untreated, Salmonella can enter the bloodstream and cause severe infections throughout the body.  

Newman’s Own reports that the cookies were manufactured and distributed across the entire country.  The peanut butter brand has an expiration date of May 3, 2013 or May 27, 2013.  Consumers should not eat any of the cookies with such an expiration date, and the date can be found on the side of the boxes.  The company reports that the date is just a number, and there are no words like “expiration date” or “use by date.”
