On October 2, 2012, the Food and Drug Administration announced that another company, Xan Confections, was issuing a voluntary recall because the company uses peanut butter from Sunland Inc.
Susan Johnson, the CEO of Xan Confections, states, “Upon learning of Sunland’s voluntary recall of peanut butter products that our company uses, we immediately notified our customers. We are committed to ensuring our products meet quality standards while ensuring the safety of consumers.”
Xan Confections announced the voluntary recall after Sunland Inc. announced their peanut butter and other type of butter may be contaminated with Salmonella. The organism poses the most danger to young children, the elderly, and people with weak immune systems. However, healthy adults can still experience serious symptoms like high fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. If the infection is left untreated, the organism can enter the bloodstream and cause life threatening conditions in otherwise healthy adults.
Xan Confections announced they are recalling the peanut butter products that were distributed between May 28, 2012 and September 28, 2012. The products were distributed to California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Texas, Alabama, Louisiana and Nova Scotia, Canada. The products are also sold online.
